HOW SMALL. A PART OF TIME
is a novel written in the style of a biograplıy. It
is the story of two eighteenth-century sisters,
Dorothea and Jenny Lynch, "whose beauty was
a brief wonder in an age renowned for its beauti-
ful women." Brought up at haunted Cabragena
House on a desolate headland in the south of
Ircland, Dolly and Jenny might have lived and
died in obscurity had not a chance encounter in
Dublin altered the whole course of their lives,
nd set in motion the folie de Lynch which was to
raise them to such dazzling heights of fame and
popularity.
The sisters, both of whom married into the
English peerage, were strikingly disimilar both in
looks and character; it was said of them that they
had nothing in common except their beauty, their
brogue and their love for one another. They
seemed indeed to be Fortune's favourite daughters,
but for all their triumphs they were not immune
from the disillusionments and sorrows experienced
by women of less striking beauty. How the
prophecy of the old beggar-woman, that the dark
girl would break her own heart and the fair girl
would make her own soul, was fulfilled, is told in
this life-story of the Lovely Lynchs.
The mood of the book is sometimnes gay, some-
times poignant. The author adnits that it is an
escape" novel; in writing it she hoped to evoke
for the pleasure of her readers the nostalgic fas-
cination of past times. The title is from Waller's
poem, Go Lovely Rose"
"How snall a part of timne they share
That are so wondrous sweet and fair!h
