Here is the outstanding and most complete

compilation of American Jewish
Genealogy ever published. This useful
work provides in readily readable charts
the family trees of every family of Jewish
origin known to have been established
in America prior to 1840, traced where
possible to the present. Non-Jewish
descendants are incduded. The complete
Index contains over 40,000 names.
FIRST AMERICAN JEWISH FAMILIES revises,

corrects, updates, and greatly
expands Malcoln H. Stern's Americans of
Jewish Descent originally published in
1960 and reprinted in 1971, which was the
basis for Stephen Birmingham's best-
seller The Grandees
FIRST AMERICAN JEWWISHFAMILIES brings
sogether facts gleaned from synagogue
ecords, court records, vital statistics,
wils, epitaphs, family bibles, family manuscripts, and

the collections of historical
and genealogical societies, and state and
local  archives.
FIRST AMERICAN JEWISH FAMILIES provides quick access

to such biographical
data as places and dates of birth, marriage,
and deah, dates of individuals arrivals in
America, significant occupations…

…DR. MALCOLM H. STERN, the com-
piler of this mammoth volume, has
long been recognized as the dean of
American Jewish genealogists. Since
1950 he has been serving as volunteer
genealogist for the American Jewish
Archives while occupying responsible
positions in American Jewish life.
A native of Philadelphia, he earned
his Bachelor of Arts degree in Semi-
tics at the University of Pennsylvania,
was ordained as a rabbi at Cincinnati's
Hebrew Union College, and granted
the degree of Master of Hebrew
Letters in 1941. He earned his doctor-
ate in Hebrew Letters, majoring in the
field of American Jewish history from
that institution in 1957. Eight years
later he was elected a Fellow of the
American Society of Genealogists,
the first Jew to be chosen a member
of that select society devoted to
scientific genealogical publication.
He has held every office in the Society
and is currently serving as its Presí-
dent.
Stern has published many articles on
American Jewish history, contributing
frequently to the American Jewish
Historical Quarterly, National Genea-
logist Society Quarterly, and other
periodicals devoted to history and
genealogy. With Bernard Postal he
CO-authored American Airlines' A
Jewish Tourist's Guide to the Carib-
bean.
Professionally Stern has served as
rabbi of congregations in Philadelphia
and in Norfolk, Virginia, as well as
functioning as a chaplain in the United
States Army Air Corps in World War
I|, Since 1964 he has been the inter-
national Director of Rabbinic Place-
ment for the national institutions of
Reform Judaism. His office is in New
York City. …….
