INTRODUCTION
I CTis related that M. Sénac de Meilhan, a friend
of the Marquis de Marigny, brother of Madame
de Pompadour, found him one day burning
papers. The Marquis picked up a large packet, and

In the writing of thás Introduftion, I have relied mainly on M.
Pierre de Nolhac's Luis XV a Madame de Pompadour, supplemented
by the Madame de Pompadeur of Mr. H. Noel Williams,
Abel-Frangois Poisson, a capable man. He became Marquis
de Marigay, and occupied the important poft of Direor General of
the King' Buildings (or of the Ofice of Works "), in saccession to
Le Normant de Tournebem. His sifter would have made him a duke ;
but his modesty forbade this.
