SHAKESPEARE'S
COMEDIES
an Anthology of Modern Criticism
EDITED BY LAURENCE LERNER
Laurence Lerner's new anthology of criticism on
Shakespeare's comedies follows the pattern of his
sUccesstul volume, Shakespeare's Tragedies. Once
again he has collected together some of the best
modern Shakespearian criticism, mostly written in
this century, and arranged it to throw light on nine of
the comedies. (He excludes the last plays and the
sO-called problem plays) A general section on comedy
includes passages from Ben Jonson and Meredith.
Excellence, not inaccessibility, has been the criterion
for a book which is designed to interest the general
reader of Shakespeare as much as the student of
literature. The contributors, therefore, run from Shaw.
Freud, and Quiller-Couch to Granville- Barker,
Middleton Murry. Auden, and Empson, and on to
more recent critics such as C. L Barber, Anne Righter.
and Cyrus Hoy.
PENGUIN SHAKESPEARE LIBRARY
This new series of Shakespearian criticism is being
issued at the same time as the New Penguin
Shakespeare (General Edhor: Prof. TJ.B. Spencer)
and is designed to supplement that edition with
critical works which make the same modern approach
to Shakespeare.
