A celebration of the days of the steam railway, combining technical and nostalgic text with photographs.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 October 2009

It can be difficult to explain just why the steam locomotive can command such reverence and attention. Is it the individual parts or the overall
'presence' which captivates us? A number of contributors provide their answers in entertaining and thoughtful verse and illustrations. Many of the photos have not been seen in other publications; the world-wide coverage is quite outstanding; e.g. included are shots of the Rio Turbio and the 'Mad Mary'.

The book is written with a 'light touch' and doesn't get bogged-down in heavy technical detail. Errors? I couldn't detect any of significance though it must be said that the career of our (New Zealand) Garratts was anything but successful.

I would recommend this title to any admirer of the steam locomotive.
