Scarce classic, numerous illustration featuring Joe Brown. This book remains the definitive work in the field of the history of climbing and walking in the Peak District. It covers the period from the 1890s when the pioneers of the movement emerged, mainly from the working classes of the large industrial towns and cities round about, until the mid 1960s when the book was published. The authors record the many changes that occurred during that period including the movement that achieved greater access to the countryside for ordinary folk by eventually winning the battle against the landowners and their bully boy tactics. The sound basis upon which this book was written includes 30 years of research and many more years of first-hand experience. There are many photographs too which bring the text to life.
