Angela Huth invites us to share the curious
lives of three apparently different people
in a love story that is also a comedy of
manners, often touched by tears.
It is London, August; Clare Lyall has just
been to her first husband's funeral. She sits
on a bench in the park thinking about her
second husband from whom she is parted.
An old woman also sits on the bench and
introduces herself. She is Mrs. Fox, a
doctor's widow. She loves Brighton,
Remembrance Day poppies, the noise of
engines and brass bands. Clare and Mrs.
Fox begin to talk.
Some hours later Clare meets Joshua Heron
at a party. For the next six months their
lives grow together, beneath the eye of
Mrs. Fox. She becomes an intrinsic part of
their existence and perhaps it is only
because of her that they remain so close
to one another. But at the end of the six
months when Clare's relationships with
both Joshua and her husband take an
unexpected twist, she turns to Mrs. Fox-
only to be surprised by her too.
Nochere Girl illustrates a timeless paradox
-that ultimately, even in marriage, and
possibly especially in marriage, a woman is
alone. Miss Huth illuminates this insight
with elegance, wit and tenderness.
