……THE G0OD CITIZEN
HISTORY is the study of times past, while
Civics and Citizenship tell us something of
what is happening in times present, the times in
which we ourselves are living and in which each
of us will do his share of the world's work. We
must not expect too much. We shall not learn, for
instance, of the wonders of modern science, nor
what new symphonies are being written and
pictures painted. But we shall learn of the frame-
work of our lives as citizensthe framework into
which must be fitted that many-coloured picture
which makes up our whole existence. For some
of us the colours may be drab and monotonous;
for others they glow brightly. But the colours are
brighter for all of us than they might have been,
just because we are part of a great community
which has taken us out of the brutish life of skin-
clad cave-dwellers and made us citizens of a
country with a great history. As citizens we earn
our living, perhaps by serving mankind in the
pursuit of science; as citizens, too, we enjoy our
isure, perhaps by listening to a symphony con-
cert, or wandering through the National Gallery.
