Although the age of steam has passed, the subject holds a
fascination for many, and there are numerous enthusiasts to
whom this book will appeal. It gives a condensed outline of
the steam locomotive in the British Isles from its beginning
early in the nineteenth century until the cessation of steam
traction in the nationalized British Railways system in 1968.
As far as possible the principal landmarks in progressive
development of designs are given due attention.
Special emphasis has been given to the many examples of
locomotives which have survived for preservation. They are
either static exhibits at museums, or at various centres run
by private organizations throughout the country.
About the Author
H.C. Casserley has made a lifetime study of British railways,
and has photographed their locomotives since the 1920s.
Now living in retirement at Berkhamstead, Herts, he has the
time to pass on his considerable personal knowledge of the
changing railway scene over the last halff centuryor more to
