Collectible good.
In 1890, Frederick R. Simms formed his first
company and became one of the founders of the
nation's motor industry. A brilliant inventor,
innovator and engincer, he established an
organisation which was to make many significant
contributions in the history of motor engineering,
and his personality- infusing the story of the
earlier years - is clearly to be seen reflected in
the subsequent development of his company
which has become Simms Motor and Elec-
tronics Corporation Ltd of today.
Bryan Morgan, the author of this book, con-
centrates mainly on the recent history of the
Corporation, but includes much of the material
from an earlier study by St John C. Nixon (The
Simms Story) which, although it told of events up
to 1953, has now become the background. The
organisation has since expanded into a com-
monwealth of companies whose members con-
tribute their specialised skills to the central
interests of the Corporation, but continue to
develop their individual lines of manufacture.
The product range of the Simms group now
extends far more broadly into our everyday lives
than the corporate title could possibly suggest
and includes, for example, vacuum flasks, central
heating installations and refrigerator linings.
This new theme of purposeful diversification,
of'Company into Group', has brought as much
technical and commercial growth as did the
previous sixty-odd years of more concentrated
eftort,
