It was about two years ago that Bro. Hubert S.
Banner told me of his intention to write a book on the
lines which he has now adopted, and the idea seemed
to me to be an excellent one. All good Freemasons
are proud to think that certain men who have a world-
wide fame were once members of the Craft, and those
who are at all thoughtful must wish to know some-
thing about the lives and characters of those Brethren
of bygone days whose names are now household words
on account of their genius and their achievements i
the work of human progresS.
They must wish to know to what extent, and ir
what manner, those famous men were infuenced b
Freemasonry, and what infuence they themselves had
upon the Craft.
Bro. Hubert Banner cleverly discerned that require
ment and perceived a gap in Masonic literature whic
could be flled up with advantage.
It will, I think, be recognized that he has made
rery good choice of subjects for his biographic:
sketches, and that that choice is properly varied an
cosmopolitan. It must also be admitted that he ha
performed his difficult task with singular fidelity
candour. He has not disguised the faults of any of
heroes, but in these candid admissions he shows….….
