Preface
This book is based on lectures that I delivered as Sister
Tutor at the Royal Portsmouth Hospital. In teaching my
pupils I found that there was no concise text-book on
Anatomy and Physiology which they could make use of,
when in any difficulty. Most books on the subject are
lengthy, and go into many details, so that the student is often
obliged to read several paragraphs before she obtains the
required information. I felt that a book was needed wherein
only the essentials were set forth, so that the student could
casily clear up any doubtful point. It is hoped the present
volume will be used as a handy reference book, and one
which will serve to recapitulate what the nurse has learnt,
when she is preparing For her examination.
The unusual arrangement, in the Chapter on the Circula-
tion, of deseribing the wenous as well as the arterial supply
of different parts of the body separately, has been carried
out because, in my experience, nurses more easily remember
the circulation in this way. A number of simple, helpful
diagrams, which should enhance the value of the book, have
been inserted by the Publishers, and it is hoped that junior
nurses will find this volume of assistance in their studies.
