The book itself is like new. The slipcase is Very Good with just minor shelf wear and a small fabric fold in one corner.…Foreword
I believe it can be roundly claimed that this book is unique.
There are published genealogies which include the names of all the members of the Royal Families of Europe. The density of information thus provided usually makes it laborious to trace particular links between one family and another. You get lost in a forest of relationships and cross-references. What makes this book so singular is precisely its simplicity. It isa remarkable achievement.
The author is the Chairman of the Buckinghamshire Family History Society. He has been fascinated
by genealogy throughout his life. In his time he has taught English in Greek and Turkish schools in
Cyprus, and made himself knowledgeable (among so much else) about Byzantium as well as about
Buckinghamshire. But what has absorbed him in recent years is the ancestry of Europe's monarchs
through nine centuries of history. The book took him nearly four years to compile and in the fullest
sense of the word it has been a labour of love. What he has produced, as it seems to me, out of his
profound and loving preoccupation is a genuinely clear and comprehensible guide to information
normally all too obscured by the complexity of its context.
His introduction is characteristically modest and workmnanlike; and, quite apart from providing the keys by which these genealogical puzzles are so elegantly unlocked, is a pleasure in itself. This, indeed is true of
the book also. It too stems from a preoccupation and a commitment: this time to good printing and to imaginative publishing. It is not every day that two enthusiasmns mingle so happily, and that form and content go forth so fittingly together.
To possess this book will prove to be a privilege, I believe.
To have made it must have been engrossing.
Sir Huw Wheldon …Introduction
These cross-referenced genealogical tables of European Royalty during the past 900 years are intended to provide a quick and simple method of tracing the widespread royal ancestry of most European rulers. The tables show ruling ancestry- not all ancestry, ruling descendants - not all descendants, and are unique because I have cross-referenced them systematically.
As all non-essential informnation has been excluded from these tables they are very casy to follow, and I have divided the work into six sections, each covering about 150 years.
Section 1. Tables 1-20 covers the period since about 1830
Section 2. Tables 21-52 is from about 1680 to 183o
Section 3. Tables 53-90 is from about 1530 to 1680
Section 4. Tables 91-120 is from about 1380 to 1530
Section 5. Tables 121-146 is from about 1220 to 1380
Section 6. Tables 147-162 is from about 1060 to 1220
There is, of course, some overlap between these sections because both reigns and lives vary so greatly in
length.
Each table shows the rulers of one country or more during the period concerned, but it only includes
those other members of each family that provide a close link with another royal family. As my chief aim
is simplicity and clarity, only those marriages that provide continuity have been included. Thus all wives
of Henry VIII are excluded as none of his children left descendants.
On each table the rulers are underlined. The small blue numbers above a name indicate the tables on
which the immediate ancestry of that person is to be found, and the blue numbers in a circle below a nan
or a marriage indicate the tables on which the continuation is shown. This is how the tables are
cross-referenced.
Red connecting lines indicate continuity, whilst a black connecting line indicates extinction after one o
two generations. Wavy lines indicate illegitimacy.
In order to reduce to a minimum the crossing of connecting lines and thus increase clarity, brothers am
sisters are not always placed in order of birth, but their dates of birth are given when known.
These tables show the main links between royal families, but there are, of course, many other more
remote ones through families not included in thís work, With these tables it is possible to trace the
ancestry of almost all 20th century European monarchs to rulers of nearly every country in Europe,
hope the tables give as much pleasure when being studied as their compilation has given me.
A. Christopher Lake ….
