ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
My grateful thanks are due to Field Marshal the Viscount
Montgomery for his kindness in reading through the
draft of the book, thereby saving me from any errors of
fact: also for permission to use hiss campaign maps as a
basis for the two maps included in this volume.
In the preparation of the material, I am indebted to
Major B. M. Woolf, M.C.. for his collaboration.
My work has been greatly facilitated by Mr. Alan
Moorehead's kind permission to draw upon his biography
of the Field Marshal. My thanks are expressed to him
and to Messrs. Hamish Hamilton, publishers of his book.
I am also indebted to Mr. Victor Musgrave, for
permission to use some of the photographs from his book
MO NTGOMERY IN PICTURES. My thanks are also
due to the publishers of this work, the Sagall Press, Ltd.,
not only for permission to reproduce, but for helpful
suggestions towards obtaining other pictures.
My thanks are also due to the authorities of the
Imperial War Museum, who have been most co-operative
and helpful.
For some of the early photographs I am particularly
indebted to Mrs. Holderness, Lord Montgomery's sister,
and to Mr. Harold Montgomery, his brother, for kindly
placing their private albums at my disposal.
