Recognition of the fact that major eriminal cases constitute
a very valuable part of our social history is long overdue. Not
only do they disclose the day-to-day lives of whole families with
an intimacy undiscoverable by any other means, not only do
they reveal the impact of contemporary ideology upon the
individuals involved, but they demonstrate the actual processes
of our legal machinery in action at a particular period, and
furnish the grounds from which the improvements of our
criminal code have sprung. For these reasons-as well as those
of justiceas much careful study should be given to the back-
ground of such cases, and to the incidents and issues which lead
up to the climax, as to the climax itself.
That invaluable series, Notable British Trials, has made
verbatim accounts of the legal proceedings in famous cases
each prefaced with a scholarly and lucid essay-available to
the student, to which he can turn with ease and assurance for
his information. But the cases which, though equally dramatic
and powerful, never for one reason or another occupied the time
of a Judge and jury he must resort to the yellowing files of the
