PREFACE
The division of the State Preliminary Examination into
two parts, and the establishment of courses of pre-nurs-
ing instruction in secondary schools and colleges for
girls, seemed to me to create a neced for a more comprehensive
textbook on Hygiene for nursing students than was already
available, and it was to meet that need that I have written this
book. It is based upon the lectures in Hygiene that I have given
for many years in Preliminary Training Schools of hospitals.
I have written for the Student Nurse rather than for the
Public Health worker or the Sanitary Inspector, and therefore
I have not included such subjects as the inspection of drains,
of slaughter-houses, or of food supplies; but I have tried to give
a background to the concise subject-matter in the Hygiene sec-
tion of the syllabus of the General Nursing Council, realizing
that the pre-nursing student will not be in constant touch with
her Tutor as is the student in a Preliminary Training School of
a hospital. With the exception of the one or two days a week
upon which she attends classes, she will be working almost inde-
pendently, and therefore I felt that a fuller explanation of some
of the underlying principles of hygiene should be included than
is usually to be found in books written specifically for the nurse
in training. However, I hope that this book will also bea useful
addition to the literature on the subject already used in Hos-
pital Training Schools.
