The world's greatest umpire, Frank Chester, has been
compelled by ill-health to retire. No longer can he stand the
physical and nervous strain of international or county cricket.
An unique career has ended, but at last he can speak frankly.
No one is better qualified to pass judgment on players,
administrators and spectators. He wore the white coat for
thirty-three years—much longer than any other umpire-
and so had the best close-up of all the great cricketers of our
time. Now he has answered the appeals of cricket lovers all
over the world to tell the secrets of the crease, and he does so
in the forthright and fearless, the knowledgeable and colourful
manner always identified with him.
On the eve of another invasion by the Australians, he
analyses their approach to the game and valuates their stars
