OXFORD
The place was Oxford ... the time, World War II ... the need, to fulfil
a desperate demand for better ways of treating infections in military and
civilian casualties. Against this background, Sir Howard Walter Florey,
Ernst B. Chain and other research workers went to work on a living
culture of Fleming's original in-through-the-window mould. Certainly
the active principle was hard to come by. The "juice"" from the mould
was in minute quantities, but eventually a pinch of brown powder was
isolated. In May, rg40, the first extracts were injected into mice infected
with streptococci. The first dose gave conclusive evidence of its power
to seek out and destroy bacteria within the living tissues.
