FOREWORD
The first edition of this book was written as student notes, but demand from
veterinarians, veterinary students and farmers led to its publication, It is intended
primarily to describe diseases of pigs present in the UK and Europe, those that
threaten the European pig industry or those which may yet be identified here. It
deals mainly with conditions found in intensive units and can, therefore, be used
worlidwide. Conditions which are uncommon in such intensive units may be dealt
with in less detail.
Treatment is only described in general as the book is intended for the use of
Veterinary Surgeons who, in the UK, are supplied annually with the NOAH
Compendium of Data Sheets for Veterinary Products. These data sheets give
details of the veterinary products cited. In other countries, similar books exist and
provide local trade names for the therapeutic agents and vaccines described.
Prescribing practice and the availability of medicines and vaccines differ from
country to country and those using the book should take account of this and adhere
to local requirements, particularly with regard to withdrawal times and legisiation The
Veterinary Formulary (Pharmaceutical Press), which describes prescription
medicines worldwide may be of assistance Feeding. housing and management
techniques are adequately described in existing books such as those published by
Farming Press, Ipswich, UK Further information about disease may be found in
Diseases of Swine' edited by B.E.Straw and others and the other books listed in the
Introduction. Information is increasingly available on the lnternet and some
addresses of important sites are included.
The descriptions of diseases and the measures adopted for their control are
based on a miture of personal experience, review of the lterature and, in the case
of the newer syndromes, word of mouth or case reports. This edition reflects the
increasing concern of the veterinary profession and public in the UK about welfare
meat quaity and general safety. The account of each disease is supplemented with
an opinion on the humane endpoint for slaughter, and on risks to man to be
expected from each disease and its therapy
The normal nutritional requirements of the pig given on pages 298-300
are reproduced with some amendments from Tables 5:1, 53 and 11:8 in "Practical
Pig Nutrition by C.T. Whittemore and FW. Elsey with kind permission of the
publishers, Farming Press Ltd of Ipswich. I wouid like to thank the colleagues who
commented on the previous editions of this book and, in particular, those who wrote
to provide further information and my daughter, Claire for editing assistance.
