The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2002 season presented five cassical works, rarely
seen in the theatre but ripe for rediscovery by a new audience.
These five plays constitute a body of work written by Shakespeare and his contem-
poraries, presenting the great diversity of the drama of the period, from city comedy
to revenge tragedy, from discovery plays to the latest addition to the Shakespeare
canon. Each is published in a separate volume alongside the RSC production.
Edward I, now generally attributed to William Shakespeare, has been in print since
1596. Originally presented by the RSC in a rehearsed reading in 1999, it received its
first full-scale staging in the 2002 season, with a text prepared and edited by Roger
Warren. Set in the age of chivalry, Edward II vividly depicts the beginning of the
Hundred Years' War and, through its chronicling of the exploits of Edward, the Black
Prince, acts as a 'prequel' to Richard II.
