ABOUT THIS BOOK
The poems in this selection are printed in the order in
which they were written, an arrangement determined
by D. H. Lawrence's own assertion that many of
them 'are so personal that, in their fragmentary
fashion, they make up a biography of an emotional
and inner life'. The earlier ones include some written
in his late teens when he was training to becomne a
teacher, and these are followed by several which em-
body such poignant relationships as those with his
mother and the women he first loved. His frequent
and protracted journeys, to Italy and Mexico espec-
ially, stimulated many of the best poems in the book,
particularly those which so vividly explore the nature
of birds, beasts and flowers. Into many of the later
poems Lawrence proclaimed his fervent convictions
about the way mnen and women should live and ex-
press themselves,, and his abhorrence of many aspects
of progress' and the machıne-age.
Early in his development as a poet Lawrence aban-
doned the conventions of metre and rhyme, and em-
ployed a flexible form of utterance which took many
diferent patterns. He was less preoccupied with
poetic style than with poetic meaning. Sometimes,
indeed, he scorns even the rudiments of prosody and
allows the intensity of his passion to explode like a
volcanic eruption.
This selection is taken from the Collected Poems,
arranged in order by Lawrence himself, and pub-
lished in 1928, and from the subsequent volume called
Pansies, published in 1929.
