Like Try and Stop Me, its predecessor, Shake Well Before Using is a collection of stories that are, for the most part, not original, al-
though I hace edited and reoritten all of them in my oun words.
Wherecer possible, I have indicated their source, or at least the place
where I heard or found them. Tracking some of them down to their
real origin would require a combination of J. Edgar Hoocer, Lord
Peter Wimsey, Sigmund Spaeth, and the entire Northwest Mounted
Police. What difference if some of them predate the decline of Rome?
I repeat that any story you neoer heard before is new to you.
I said all this cery clearly in the foreword of Try and Stop Me,
but a few of the boys toere so busy "originating" the stories from precisely the same wits and press agents who told them to me, or from the
same compendiums and radio programs, that they didn't seem to hear
me. Reading their strident claims, I recalled a line of Richard Brinsley
Sheridan's: "What a memory for jokes-and ohat an imagination for
facts.
I have attempted to divide the contents of this volume in the man-
ner of a metropolitan Sunday newspaper, toith the hope that there toill
be at least one section to appeal to everybody's taste. Only a "Help
Wanted section is missing, and that may become necessary after the
reoiews appear.
