SPRING COMES TO THE CRESCENT
The Crescent is just one of those quiet London
backwaters where a few retired, elderly people have
lived quietly for years, playing bridge with each
other, quarrelling with each other and knowing each
other's business. But however much they disagree,
they are all of one mind over one thingthat the
household at No. 8 is a blot on an otherwise blame-
less street. The six Grimshaw girls, living at No. 8
with the erratic and sinister figure of their father,
Robert Grimshaw, have always kept themselves
aloof from the other inhabitants of the Crescent,
knowing that they would not be accepted by them
and afraid of their father, who has shown from the
start that he wishes to shun his neighbours.
Here is a story not without excitement, for which
the Crescent as a whole forms a contrastingly placid
background, moving swiftly from a January after-
noon to a morning in April, when spring eventually
comes to the Crescent, and it is handled with all
Elizabeth Ford's usual charm and skill
