Born on September 29, 1758, Horatio Nelson was the son of Edmund and Catherine Nelson. He was raised in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk, where his father served as rector. His mother’s maiden name was Sockling, and through her lineage, he was connected to Sir Robert Walpole. Horatio was also named after his godfather, the first Lord Walpole.
