MAUGHAM'S aim is to tell a
story. He goes no deeper, he
dissects character no further than the
story needs. Introspective or static
stories bore him. He likes a story to
have a beginning, a middle, and an
end. His favourite method, narrative
in the first person singular, he has
developed to a pitch unequalled in
our time, avoiding its pitfalls with a
skill which only the professional can
fully admire.
It is hard to make a choice of his
best. In the Maupassant vein, no
one could better the celebrated Rain.
