By this time the number of European
travellers in Africa who have returned
to publish their "first-hand' accounts
must be legion: but, now that the
trappings of Western civilization are
more widespread on that continent, few
seem to have been prepared, in their
search for material, to renounce the
comforts thus provided. It tended to be
the absence of these that occasioned
any hardships endured.
fanheinz Jahn, a well known expert
on African literature and art, deter-
mined that in his travels about Nigeria
and Togo he would avoid these pitfalls
by adapting himself to African condi-
tions and conforming to local custom in
the matters of cating, sleeping and
travelling. There were initial drawbacks
to this approach-his first meal of palm
chop scalded his alimentary canal from
one extremity to the other, and people
of all races were a little disconcerted to
meet a European who travelled about
on a hired bicycle or in a death-defying
Mammy-wagon and was quite ready
to sleep on the floor-but the author
achieved his object of obtaining an
authentic view of West African life by
entering African homes. There is much
light-hcarted entertainment here, which
does not prevent there being penetrat-
ing comment from a well-equipped
mind on the problems of an emnergent
state. The many fine photographs are
by Helmut Lander,
