Blackthorn wood, (Prunus spinosa), is renowned for being exceptionally hard, dense, and durable, making it ideal for crafting sturdy walking sticks, shillelaghs, and tool handles.

This tough timber is relatively light for its bulk, resilient to impact, and often features a dark, knotty, and purple-hued appearance.

• Hardness & Density: It is an incredibly dense, rigid wood that resists warping, splitting, and flexing, which provides a reliable, secure feel in walking sticks.
• Appearance & Texture: Freshly cut wood can exhibit a deep purple hue, often with a rough bark that can be sanded to a fine finish. The branches typically have a significant number of thorns that create distinctive "knuckles" in the wood, highly prized for crafting.
• Durability & Strength: Due to its immense strength and natural toughness, it was historically used for creating clubs (shillelaghs) and is excellent for carving. It is highly resistant to pests.
• Use in Crafting: It is particularly sought after for walking sticks and sticks for Irish traditional fighting (shillelaghs).
• Firewood Quality: Blackthorn burns very slowly, producing a high amount of heat with very little smoke, making it excellent firewood,
