Dr William Henry Duncan was appointed as the country's
first Medical Officer of Health in Liverpool in 1847 as the
result of pressure for a public health system to cope with the
problems of rapid urbanisation and industrialisation in the
first half of the nineteenth century. His work formed the
blueprint for subsequent national public health legislation
and Liverpool has continued to be at the forefront of public
health activities.
In 1983 the University of Liverpool established the annual
Duncan Memorial Lecture to increase recognition of the
work of Duncan and of Liverpool's important public health
heritage. All of the speakers are experts in their respective
fields of medical and environmental health, and their
chosen topics reflect contemporary public health concerns,
many of which Duncan would have been familiar with. This
volume contains lectures ranging from Sir Donald Acheson in the state of the public health to Jonathon Porritt on Gaia
and Health.
