In small gardens great originality of design is seldom possible. There is
just not the scope to develop ideas sufficiently, and demands of convenience
place drastic limitations on what can be done. But in any garden, however
small, it is possible to introduce features which will give it increased interest
and distinction and will make it a better and more beautiful garden than it
was before. These features may be mainly architectural, such as walls,
terraces, ornaments, fountains, etc., or they may be living features such as
plants of special interest or more ordinary plants used in an unusual or
striking manner, or they may be a combination of these two. It is the purpose
of this booklet to indicate some of the most practical of these features and
the way in which they may be used and to show how all or much of the
work can be done by the garden owner at great saving of cost.'
