When reaching the plattorm, the spectator faces the South (France).
whilst he is turning his back towards the North (Brussels).
In front o! him he witnesses between the trees, the burning Hougoumont-
farm; in the West, the village of Braine-I'Alleud ; in the foreground, in bet-
ween, the road to Nivelles, bordered with trees.
On the left-hand side, Eastwards, the Papelotte-iarm, the castle of Ficher-
mont, the trees of the Wood of Paris (in 1815 much more extended than
nowadays) : in South-East direction, Plancenoit's burning steeple.
Above, situated on the road to Charleroi, the Belle-Alli ance-Farm; along-
side the same road, at the spectator's level, the Holy-Hedge-Farm; then, in
he direction of Brussels, the Mont-St-Jean-Farm, which served the allies as a
