The Midshipmaid: The Tale of a Naval Manoeuvre is a British comedy novel written by Ian Hay (the pen name of Major General John Hay Beith). First published in 1933 by Hodder & Stoughton, the book is a novelisation of Hay’s hit 1931 West End stage play of the same name, which he co-wrote with Stephen King-Hall.The story is a fast-paced naval farce centered on a strict government economic expert who visits the British fleet to look for budget cuts. Chaos ensues when his adventurous, flirtatious daughter arrives alongside him, instantly distracting the ship’s officers and sparking romantic rivalries, high-seas hijinks, and comedic miscommunications.
